Witchgrass Artist Panel Discussion with Josephine Chase, Karen Gelardi, Hilary Irons, and Juliet Karelsen

  • SPEEDWELL projects 630 Forest Avenue Portland, ME, 04101 United States (map)

Join artists Josephine Chase, Karen Gelardi, Hilary Irons, and Juliet Karelsen in conversation with herbalist Cathleen Miller .

The four artists featured in Witchgrass respond to the intricacies, resiliency, metaphor, fantasy, and spirituality they observe in a vast botanical ecosystem. The title of the exhibit is based on Pulitzer Prize winner Louise Gluck's powerful pleading poem of love and pain from the point of view of the natural world. Like Gluck, these artists are moved by the beauty, perfection, imperfection, and poetry of the natural world and what is at stake while they simultaneously comment in their unique voices on the ravages the planet continues to endure.

About Cathleen Miller

Cathleen Miller is an herbalist based in Scarborough at Sanctuary Gardens. Her practice involves a close and sensitive look at the ways in which humans and plants connect in terms of nurturing, attention, connectedness to other forms of life, anchored in traditional herbalist practices combined with a more personal, experimental approach. In addition to her work in herbalism, Miller is also an artist and poet.
