SPEEDWELL PROMOTES THE CREATIVE WORK OF WOMEN WHO HAVE DEMONSTRATED A LIFELONG COMMITMENT TO THEIR ARTISTIC PRACTICE.
in order to support artists in making a lifelong commitment to their work, we OFFER residencies in winter and summer months.
The goal of the residency is to provide uninterrupted studio time in a large 1600 square foot contemporary exhibition/studio space in order to experiment or resolve work in progress. We encourage the use of the space to hang comprehensive installations of work in order to see it more clearly, or perhaps document it in a way not previously available.
The Winter residencies are scheduled between January and February. The summer residencies are scheduled between July and August. Each residency is between 4 and 8 weeks.

Artists of any discipline who identify as women, gender-fluid, or nonbinary are eligible. To pursue our mission to support artists who have made a lifetime commitment to their work, we prioritize artists who have worked in their fields for 20+ years whenever possible. If you have any questions about eligibility, please send us an email.
We accept artists and creative workers of all disciplines including musicians, performers, writers, designers, architects, etc…

We hold open calls for applications in September. Residents for the following year are announced in December. Please keep an eye on our social media and mailing list to find out more.

We host between 2 and 4 residents with 1 artist occupying the space at a time.

We ask two things: that you make regular use of the space while you are in residence and that you host at least one public event. Artists in the past have hosted open houses, pop-up shops, installations, interactive works, etc.

Yes! We are currently able to offer our residents an unrestricted stipend of $500.

We offer access to our entire exhibition space. The exhibition space has expansive windows that face the street and therefore provides the opportunity for performance and public installation potential; we also have a formally dedicated window exhibition space that can be utilized during one's residency for personal exhibition.
In addition to our space, we are happy to facilitate connections with specialized facilities in Portland such as printmaking or photo studios.
