EMILY MUIR

Emily (she/her) was born in 1904 and left an indelible mark as a painter, architect, and conservationist. Spending her formative years in New York, she honed her craft at the Art Students League under the mentorship of Richard Lahey, whose influence shaped her artistic vision.

Amidst the challenges of The Great Depression, Emily and her husband, William Muir, flourished as commercial artists, eventually settling in Stonington, Maine, where they crafted their forever home and studio in the 1940s. It was here that Emily embarked on her second career in architecture, leaving a lasting gift through the design of 45 modern cottages in and around Crockett Cove, each intricately woven into the natural landscape.

In the 1970s, Emily's dedication to conservation led her to preserve three islands in Maine, generously donating them to The Nature Conservancy. Emily Muir's impact extended far beyond her lifetime, she passed away in Stonington in 2003. Her artistic brilliance and commitment to Maine’s environment leave an enduring legacy that continues to inspire.
